Fifteen Minutes with the Father Series
Words of Wisdom:
Proverbs 18: 20 -21 – 20 Words satisfy the mind as much as fruit does the stomach; good talk is as gratifying as a good harvest. 21 Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.
Mark 11:22-26 – 22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
John 8:36 – 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
In light of the persistent and pervasive tragedy and conflict in our global world coupled with personal struggles and hardships it so easy to slip into a spirit of defeat and despair. Relationships, family work, life, illness, finances, policies and pollution. The list of potential stressors could extend far beyond this moment. However it is in those times we are most challenged and most rewarded when we push past the emotions that well up in our humanness and press our way to Christ. Sounds so simple. But what does that mean concretely. My Grandma used to say; “What you water grows.” So ask yourself, what are you feeding?
Are you pouring spiritual nourishment into the worry, anxiety and fear of the “what-is” and “what-if’s”? Or are you feeding your faith. A pastor once asked, where is your praise? What do you spend your time thinking about, talking about, stressing about. That where your praise is. Or do you direct your time (read praise) to things eternal?
Proverbs reminds us that we have the power of life and death in our tongue. Words can kill your spirit, hopes, and dreams or conversely they can speak life into your stressful situation or the heart of the broken “other”. In Mark, Jesus gives us the recipe for success;
- A Pinch of Faith
- A Pound of Prayer
- A Fistful of Forgiveness
- A Bushel of Boldness
Jesus is showing us that everything we need to have peace and feel free, already lies within us. We can impact our future simply by following this recipe. In faith, we can tell our mountains to move. Jesus implores for us to forgive recklessly, pray unceasingly and boldly demand in faith that your “problems” get out of our way. God promised that when we passed through the fire and flood he would be there with us. You get to choose everyday what you think, focus and allow to consume you. Invest wisely. As the adage goes quit telling God how big your problems are, and instead tell your problems how big your God is.
Ask yourself, do you really believe;
- That all things work together for the good of those that love the Lord? Romans 8:28
- That ALL things are possible with God? Matthew 19:26
- That God is Love? 1 John 4:8
- That God is constant, He changes not, and is not a man that he should lie? Malachi 3:6, Numbers 23:19
- That if God is for you who can prevail against you? Romans 8:31
If you answer yes, prove it! – Live like you’re loved, fought for, doted on, protected, promised and have purpose.
If you answer no, I’m here to testify that our God is faithful. Read his promises for yourself, deposit them in your spirit and hide them in your heart. I dare you to try God… He’s waiting.
We come asking for our faithless hearts that if you are real, please make yourself real to us. Lord Jesus, you walked this earth and was often moved with compassion for us in our human condition, remind us that you know our struggles and have not abandoned us. Holy Spirit come be our comfort today, though our tears leave salty trails on weary faces, repair our hearts that we may feel your peace and love.
Lord life on this side of heaven sure gets tough, help us to keep our spiritual eyes on you. When we focus on you, we can hide in the safety of your wings where you fight the battles we were never intended to face. Daddy, we love you. Thank you for loving us so much. Be patient with our hard hearted ways, continue to bless us with your grace and please never ever leave our side.
We need you God… despite our actions.
We are here standing with outstretched hands begging for you to shine your presence on our lives. Thank you for never growing weary.
